I am applying for the Sport Therapy and Rehabilitation BSc (hons) course, as I am really interested in how the body works and how through exercise we can change the way our body looks and how the body can repair its self and I want to go into a career as a sports therapist coupled with personal training, and ultimately join the Royal Navy and progress to a Physical Training Instructor.
This passion has come from my experiences in physical fitness by attending boot camps, running club and Pilates. In gaining injuries myself and seeing how sports therapy plays a big role in getting someone back to physical fitness.
Both my mum and Dad had have engaged with sports therapists and rehabilitation programmes and I have seen the impact this has on physical fitness and mental wellbeing and I want to be able to give that to others.
Although I have no relevant qualifications for this course I have the desire and interest. I have borrowed books on xxxx and xxxx from Mark Smith (the owner of Total Fitness and Health, where I do most of my activities) and he has really given me insight into this industry so I have learnt a lot of basics about how the body works, from a fitness perspective.
I have shown I can study independently and I am highly motivated to learn. I have demonstrated that by completing my first year at Plymouth Art College (and on track in my second year) doing my extended BTEC in photography and whilst that has no relevance to sport therapy and rehab I have demonstrated the skills and committment to succeed at this higher level through independent study.
On a personal level, I have demonstrated reliability by holding some form of employment since I was 13 (paper girl) and I still hold a part time job as a waitress. I work hard, learn quickly and I am reliable.
I have decided to change my study direction as my long term goal is to become a PTI in the Royal Navy or move into the private sports therapist and personal trainer arena and undertaking this degree will give me the qualifications 3 years and experience for that. Attending the open day in October has made me more determined to go into this industry of work and this course really stuck out to me due to the additional qualifications if offers throughout the programme and it covers everything I want to learn and progress into.

I am applying for the Sport Therapy and Rehabilitation BSc (hons) course, as I am really interested in how the body works, how it develops and how the body can recover after injury through structured rehabilitation and therapy coupled with the positive effect this has on someone’s mental wellbeing. Ultimately I want to join the Navy as a Physical Training Instructor.
This passion has come from my own experiences as I have developed in my own physical fitness as well as seeing both my parents work through injuries to develop their own fitness too.
At school I wasn’t overly keen on PE, being pretty average in team games and athletics as I had a history of knee pain, which hampered my ability to take part, but my interest was always still there. Then my Mum, who was a heavy smoker and a bit overweight, started doing fit boot camps and I have seen her develop from someone who could barely do one sit up into someone who can do 50 in a minute. From this she started to run and, in 2012 ,we both did the ease into 5k application. She has now run a number of half marathons. This hasn’t been easy as she has suffered from very tight calves and had a number of muscle strains so she has had sport’s massages, kinetic taping, foam roller work and structured exercises to build her muscle strength and ease the muscle knotting. It’s this behind the scenes bit of sport and exercise that has really interested me.
Whilst not running like my Mum I have done a number of 5ks but I still struggle with weak ankles and knees so I started to do the boot camps with my mum at Total Fitness and Health, at Crownhill Fort. This is run by Mark Smith, a retired Navy PTI, who has worked with the general PT and has a wealth of qualifications and experience in physical therapy and rehabilitation. In doing the boot camps Mark has worked with me in developing the strength in my glutes, which in turn is helping my knees.
Me, my Mum and Dad have all recently started Pilates, this too is held at Crownhill Fort and ran by Faye Jones. My dad has suffered with lower back pain on and off over a number of years and has rounded shoulders and Faye has started to use my dad as a case study, measuring his mobility week on week in her blog. It appears to be related to his knees and ankles and Dad has already seen a marked improvement by doing the targeted exercises Faye has given him. I’m really interested in this as Faye has commented that our physique is very similar.
Another angle I’m interested in is looking into how physical activity can have a positive impact on mental health. Mum has depression and she has seen a big improvement in this since she gave up smoking and developed a physical exercise routine. So I see sport therapy being about mental health as a well as physical health and performance and I would really like to explore that more.
Although I have no direct relevant qualifications for this course I do have the desire and interest. I have seen and experienced myself how sport therapy and rehabilitation can have a huge effect on physical and mental health and fitness. I have also had quite a bit of insight into the industry through watching Mark work on my Mum and how he works with his clients in general. It is through Mark that I have developed the longer-term aim to be a PTI in the Navy and he has really given me a good insight into this industry as a whole.
Having left Notre Dame School in 2014 and going onto to study my extended BTEC in Photography at the Plymouth Art College, I have already shown that I can study independently in a University environment. I have demonstrated that I am highly motivated to learn by successfully completing my first year and I am well on track in my second year to leave with a DMM as a minimum. Whilst my extended BTEC in photography isn’t directly relevant to Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation I have shown that I have the skills, drive and desire to learn and study in a university environment.
I have decided to change direction in my study, as my long-term goal is to become a PTI in the Royal Navy or move into the private sports therapist and personal trainer area. Undertaking this degree will give me the qualifications and the choice of doing optional additional qualifications and this was really appealing to me. This 3-year programme will also allow me the time and space to really decide whether I take the Royal Navy route or private work route.
Attending the open day in October 2015 has made me more determined to go into this industry of work and this course really stuck out to me due to the additional qualifications it offers throughout the programme and it covers everything I want to learn and progress into.
On a personal level, I have demonstrated reliability by holding some form of employment since I was 13 (paper girl) and I still hold a part time job as a waitress. I work hard and learn quickly. I am also a good team worker and that which was key in achieving my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.
