If I do join the navy I will initially be offered a career for 12 years. If I get promoted at any stage in my career my offer will be extended to 20years or until I age 40, whichever is later. For officers, I would automatically receive this same extension when I achieve a key point in my career path or by selection on merit. Everyone may have the opportunity to serve beyond this point, depending what you would like to do and the needs of the royal navy.

If I would like to leave the navy at any stage of my career, I can send a request one year before completing my return of service. A return of service is the length of time you must stay in the royal navy after you reach a certain stage in my training. Ultimately it will depend on the branch I join but the return of service is usually around 4 years.
